Suertes del Marqués
White WineSuertes del Marqués Tenerife Valle de la Orotava Vidonia VP 2021
Listán Blanco cuvées from Suertes are some of the most distinctive white wines in Spain. They are drawn from three vineyards on the high slopes of Pico del Teide in the Valle de La Orotava of northern Tenerife, which was once known as Vidonia. The wines from this area were highly acclaimed across 17th-century Europe, with 'Canary' being so popular that it made a cameo in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor.
The El Barranco vineyard is the oldest of the three, having been planted with Listán Blanco over a century ago, and is still trained according to Tenerife’s traditional trenzado system. The age of the vines is unknown, but it is believed to be over a century old. The second and third sites, La Solana and El Ciruelo, are small plots with ungrafted vines located nearby. All the vines used for this cuvée are over a century old and grow on volcanic and basaltic soils.
The winemaking process is minimalist, with whole bunch pressing and natural fermentation in foudre. The wine is then aged for 11 months and not filtered. The resulting wine is dry white with a complex bouquet of aromas, including floral, herbal, and mineral notes. The palate is rich and textured, with flavors of tropical fruits and citrus, balanced by crisp acidity. This wine can be enjoyed now, but it will also age gracefully over the next few years.
