Zinfandel is a bold, fruit-driven red wine known for ripe blackberry and cherry flavours, warming spice, and a full-bodied, generous style. It often shows notes of black pepper, vanilla, and plum, with higher alcohol in riper expressions, while also being used to produce the lighter, sweeter style known as White Zinfandel.
Originally from Croatia and also known as Primitivo in Italy, Zinfandel is now most closely associated with California, where warm climates and old vines produce rich, characterful wines.
