Swiss Wines

Switzerland’s winemaking history spans over two millennia, beginning with the traditions of the Celts and Romans who first cultivated its alpine slopes. Winemaking flourished also in the middle ages, with incursions by the powerful Duchy of Burgundy leading to some diffusion of Burgundian winemaking techniques, grape varieties, and wine culture.

The country’s wine regions, including Vaud, Valais, Geneva, and Ticino, reflect diverse climates and terroirs. Indigenous grape varieties such as Chasselas, celebrated for its finesse and minerality, and Petite Arvine, known for its aromatic richness, are important to Swiss viticulture.

Despite its small size, Switzerland boasts remarkable diversity, from crisp whites along Lake Geneva and Zurich to robust Merlot from Ticino in the Italian-speaking south. The Swiss winemaking culture prioritises craftsmanship and precision, with steep vineyards and hand harvesting reflecting a deep respect for the land. These wines are scarcely seen, as most are purchased by collectors and the Swiss themselves before they have a chance to be shipped abroad.
