Croatian Wines

Croatia’s winemaking heritage is as ancient as Italy’s and Greece’s. The entire coastline of the Adriatic has been in the midst of the shipping of wine and agricultural goods for most of its history. Indigenous varieties like Plavac Mali and Pošip are amongst Croatia’s most famous, besides Crljenak, which has come to be known as Primitivo in Italy, and Zinfandel in the US. Malvazija Istriana also produces distinctive white and skin-contact wines, it thrives in its ancestral home of Istria, but is panted as far afield as California and Australia. Despite being a national wine market for most of its period as a sovereign state, Croatia has emerged as a significant player in Central Europe’s wine landscape.
