Savagnin is a white grape variety native to eastern France, most famously grown in the Jura region, where it forms the backbone of the region’s iconic oxidative wines, particularly Vin Jaune. An ancient grape that is sometimes referred to as Traminer (not to be confused with the related Roter Traminer or Gewürztraminer) in German speaking countries, Savagnin thrives in the Jura’s marl and limestone soils, producing wines of remarkable structure, acidity, and longevity. Its traditional élevage under a veil of yeast, or sous voile, gives rise to nutty, curry-like aromas and intense saline complexity. In non-oxidative styles, Savagnin shows a taut, mineral-driven profile with citrus and herbal notes. Though niche, it is a grape of profound character and historical significance, expressing the essence of Jura’s singular terroir.
