Milan Nestarec is based in Moravia, in the south-east of the Czech Republic, working from vineyards around the village of Velké Bílovice. He took over the family estate at a young age and, over the past decade, has reoriented it away from conventional production towards a more direct, low-intervention approach, while embracing a clear connection to the region’s viticultural traditions.
The vineyards sit on a mix of loess and clay over limestone, with a continental climate that gives marked vintage variation. Varieties are largely Central European, including Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Blaufränkisch, and St. Laurent, alongside others typical to Moravia, including Müller-Thurgau and Sylvaner. Work in the vineyard is organic, with an emphasis on soil health and root systems.
In the cellar, fermentations are spontaneous, sulphur is used sparingly or not at all, and élevage is handled in a mix of older oak and neutral vessels.
Aside from production methods, Milan has become the defacto global face of Czech wine, as his wines are found all around the world, and often are the only wines from his Country available in a given city.
