Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer is a highly aromatic white grape variety most famously associated with Alsace in northeastern France, though its origins likely trace back to the Alto Adige region of northern Italy, where it evolved from the ancient Traminer grape. Known for its perfumed nose of lychee, rose petals, and exotic spices, Gewürztraminer produces intensely flavoured wines with low acidity, high alcohol, and a distinctive oily texture. It thrives in cool climates and is grown in regions such as Germany, Austria, northern Italy, and parts of the New World including New Zealand and the Pacific Northwest of the United States. While it can be made dry, off-dry, or sweet, benchmark examples often come from Alsace, where producers like Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and Trimbach craft powerful, age-worthy expressions that balance richness with floral complexity.
