White WineRongo 'Reflection' Riesling 2025
Ray Chen is an accomplished wine expert whose experience includes time as a viticultural researcher at Cornell University and oenologist for Treasury Wine Estates.
In 2021, she founded Rongo Wines in Victoria following her seasoned ventures in the vineyards of New Zealand, France, and the United States. It is a vehicle for her winemaking philosophy, which focuses on a small-batch, low-intervention approach with locally sourced and sustainably farmed fruit. Every wine produced is crafted to complement the intricate flavours of Asian food.
From the Elgo vineyard in Strathbogie. The wine sits seven days on skins after crushing, with free run juice drawn into stainless steel for cool fermentation, fermented dry. The wine sits in tank on gross lees for six months, and is unfined and unfiltered prior to bottling.
The hallmark is its phenolic grip, imparting a slight chewiness and Germanic texture. There’s an intricate bouquet of herbs on the nose of rosemary, lavender, thyme, grapefruit and florals. Plenty of richness and drive on the palate which is defined by its gorgeous texture, delivering yellow and green apples and preserved lemon, and a rounded though firmly present acid backbone. Unashamedly an alternative stylistic statement of Australian Riesling, and a good one.
