Wine Scholar Guild is an internationally-recognised qualification that focusses solely on the most influential wine regions of Europe, instilling a deep understanding of these wines, winemakers, and their culture.

What you will learn

Learn all about and taste your way through the ‘need to know’ wines of France including essential varieties, wine styles, appellations, winemaking and viticulture while exploring history, culture, cuisine and notable producers.

Who is the course for?
There is no pre-requisite to study for this course. It would suit anyone wanting to improve their knowledge of French wines, W.S.E.T. students after any level who are looking for a more in depth and cultural wine course and keen enthusiasts who prefer to learn in a structured manner. On successfully passing the exam students are awarded a certificate and lapel pin.

Class sizes are capped at 14 students to keep things interactive and enjoyable for all involved.

How much does the course cost?
The course is $850 per person.

What’s included in the price?
Your $850 covers everything you’ll need to get the most out of the experience. This includes a comprehensive study book, one-year access to online resources, expert-led tuition across five weeks, and tastings of more than twenty wines during class. You’ll also sit a written multiple-choice exam (no tasting exam), and if successful, receive an official certificate and lapel pin.

Is there an exam?
Yes, there’s a 1-hour written multiple-choice exam in Week 6. There is no tasting exam.

Do I need any prior wine knowledge to join?
No. The course is beginner-friendly but also great for W.S.E.T. students or wine lovers seeking deeper knowledge.

What will I learn?
You’ll explore key French wine regions, grape varieties, wine styles, winemaking techniques, and the cultural context of French wine.

What if I can’t attend after booking?
If you withdraw within 72 hours of the course starting, you’ll forfeit 20% of the fee. Full refunds are available if Cardwell Cellars cancels the first class.

Yes, we plan to run more courses, including our Introductory Wine Course in 2026, and a Central & Eastern European wine course, and more.

Fine Print

For WSG classes, if you fail the exam you may re-sit for a fee.

Students withdrawing from the course within 72 hours of commencement will forfeit 20% of the course fee. 

The course can be cancelled by Cardwell Cellars up to the day before the commencement of the first class. All fees will be refunded in this case.
