From the Herzog vineyard in the Pfalz, where sandstone and loess soils support extreme ripeness in selected years, this Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese is built from individually selected botrytised berries. The nose is dense and expressive, opening with candied citrus, quince paste, apricot, and orange marmalade, with honey, saffron, and a faint herbal note. The palate is highly concentrated, with intense sweetness held in check by piercing acidity. Texture is viscous yet controlled, the fruit layered and precise rather than diffuse. The finish is very long, driven by citrus and botrytis spice, with a saline and lightly bitter edge that keeps the wine defined.
