From Château Closiot’s Clos Bonneau in Barsac, where red earth and pebbles sit over the plateau’s limestone base, this wine draws its tension as much from the site’s cool soils as from its botrytised fruit. Jean-Marie Guffens harvests in multiple passes under the first light of day rather than relying on the usual morning mists, and the élevage, split between new oak and extended time in vat, preserves both concentration and freshness. Composed of 98% Sémillon and 2% Muscadelle, it opens with jasmine, honey, saffron, roasted pineapple, and peach. The palate is dense and energetic, with sweet citrus, honeyed peach, and candied ginger carrying through a long finish that remains fresh and controlled despite the wine’s high residual sugar.
