Austria’s southern frontier, Styria (Steiermark), is a region of steep vineyards, volcanic soils, and cool alpine breezes—producing some of the country’s most singular and expressive wines. Best known for razor-sharp Sauvignon Blanc, textured Gelber Muskateller, and brisk, salty Morillon (the local name for Chardonnay), Styrian wines are all about clarity, minerality, and tension. The region is fragmented into Südsteiermark, Vulkanland Steiermark, and Weststeiermark, each with its own microclimate and stylistic focus.
