From the Mezzana zone of Ticino, where Merlot has long found a second home north of the Alps, Bongio’s 2022 reflects the canton’s granite-rich soils and lake-moderated climate. The fruit is harvested by hand and fermented with careful extraction before ageing in oak to round the tannins without masking varietal clarity. The wine leans toward dark cherry, plum and cassis, with a thread of alpine herb and graphite giving lift. The palate is medium-bodied and structured, the tannins fine and composed rather than heavy, finishing dry with a subtle mineral firmness that feels distinctly Ticinese. It is a Merlot of balance and restraint, shaped more by site than by cellar excess.
