White WineMaximin Grünhaus ‘Das Kapital’ Riesling 2021
For the 200th birthday of Karl Marx, the VDP winery Maximin Grünhaus in Mertesdorf, near Trier, has crafted a wine from the historic vineyards once owned by the Marx family. This Riesling, named "Das Kapital" after the famed work of Marx, hails from the Herrenberg vineyard and has been bottled in a limited edition of 1,300. It was featured prominently during the celebratory events of Marx's birthday in Trier.
For about 30 years, the Marx family owned more than two hectares of vineyard land in Herrenberg. Heinrich Marx, Karl's father and a lawyer from Trier, initially purchased these south-west facing plots as an investment. Following his father's death in 1838, Karl Marx inherited the vineyard, until his mother compensated him for his share. Upon his mother's passing, Karl Marx sold the last five barrels of wine stored in the cellar of his Trier home.
Now, this special Herrenberg Riesling is being sold exclusively at the Weinhaus Trier, situated directly across from Marx's birthplace. This release offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a piece of history intertwined with the legacy of one of the most influential figures of the 19th century, encapsulated in a bottle of exquisite wine.
