Freeman Vineyards
White WineFreeman Furmint 2025
Established in 1999 by former Charles Sturt University Professor of Wine Science Brian Freeman, Freeman Vineyards is located in the Hilltops region of New South Wales, where elevated vineyards and decomposed granite soils have proved well suited to a diverse collection of European grape varieties. Among the estate's most unusual plantings are Furmint and Hárslevelű, the two principal white varieties associated with Hungary's historic Tokaj wine region. Originally planted in the 1970s, these vines were subsequently expanded by Freeman. The 2025 is produced predominantly from Furmint with a small proportion of Hárslevelű, grown in the Altura Vineyard at approximately 560 metres elevation. The grapes are destemmed and gently pressed shortly after harvest, with fermentation in stainless steel, lees stirring and maturation of selected parcels in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels. The wine displays aromas of honeysuckle, yellowbox honey and dried orange peel, complemented by subtle vanilla and savoury herbal notes. The palate is full and textural, with balancing acidity, gentle oak complexity and a persistent finish reminiscent of bay leaf. An intriguing Australian interpretation of one of Central Europe's most historically significant white grape varieties.
