Xiao Pu
Red WineXiao Pu Domaine de la Gyalthang High Altitude Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
100% Cabernet Sauvignon from 3000 metres elevation in Shangri-La, Yunnan. Destemmed and macerated for 14 days before a slow wild ferment. Aged in neutral oak for 12 months. Crisp and varietal on the nose, with black currant, dark cherries, a mint-like medicinal lick, and a touch of smoke and sweet tobacco. Medium bodied and elegant, with fine high-altitude tannins and bright acidity. There's a precision to the fruit and a clean herbal line carrying through to a mineral finish.
Founded in 2017, by ex-sommelier Ian Dai Hongjing, Xiao Pu is a 'nomad winery', travelling between wine growing regions to produce idiosyncratic cuvées experimenting with extended maceration, alternative varieties, and multi-vintage blending.
Directly translating to ‘Little Garden’ , Xiao Pu wines are a product of nature, made with sustainable practices and respect for the land and its people. Ian Dai works with long-term partners who share the vision of sustainable agriculture and modern farming philosophies.
Xiao Pu's Domaine de la Gyalthang label is based in Shangri-La, the capital city of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan. Historically known as Gyalthang by the Tibetan population, in 2001 the Chinese government renamed the city to Shangri-La, after the mythical Tibetan city in James Hilton's 1933 novel Lost Horizon, in an effort to increase tourism. Vineyards, including some owned by multi-national groups such as LVMH, are planted on steep slopes, from 2000 to 3000 metres above sea level. Here, a long ripening season aided by sunny days and relatively mild winters, and irrigation from pure snow-melt, produce high-quality, concentrated grapes.
