Viúva Gomes
Red WineViúva Gomes Reserva Tinto Collares Ramisco 1969
Portugal’s most singular terroirs. Sourced from ungrafted Ramisco vines grown on the sandy Atlantic soils of Colares—an appellation perched precariously between the sea and the Sintra hills—the wine is a study in longevity and grace. Ramisco, a thick-skinned, late-ripening variety, thrives here in ocean-cooled vineyards planted just metres from the surf.
Now over five decades old, the wine opens with haunting aromas of dried rose petal, iodine, bergamot, tobacco leaf, and salty red fruit. The palate is delicate yet vibrant, with a spine of acidity that remains astonishingly intact, carrying savoury notes of forest floor, dried cranberry, and iron-rich minerality. With its sinewy tannins and lifted, almost aerial structure, this is not a wine of power, but of persistence and poise—a rare, living piece of Portuguese wine heritage.
