Red WineJean-Baptiste Souillard Saint-Joseph 2023
From Jean-Baptiste Souillard, working small parcels on steep, granite terraces above the Rhône, this Saint-Joseph is drawn from old-vine Syrah planted at altitude, where exposure and thin soils keep yields low and structure firm. Souillard, trained in Burgundy before returning north, favours whole-cluster fermentation and élevage in mostly used oak, which shows here in the wine’s shape and detail. The nose opens with blackberry, plum skin, and violet, with black pepper, graphite, and a light smoky note. The palate is structured, with fine, persistent tannins and a mineral line carrying dark fruit and savoury spice. Acidity is fresh and direct. The finish is long, dry, and stony, marked by pepper and a faint ferrous edge.
