Red WineMathier Syrah Les Pyramides 2024
Elegant alpine Syrah from the canton of Valais; the source of the Rhône river and Switzerland's largest and sunniest wine region.
Valais stretches along a glacial valley that is today the source of the Rhône river. Here, 55 grape varieties grow in diverse soils, at elevations up to 1100 metres above sea level. Vineyards are planted on the north and south banks of the river, with those on the southern bank catching sunlight reflected off the white snow-capped mountains. There's relatively little rain here, and vineyards are fed with glacial irrigation. Syrah was introduced to the region in 1926, carried north from its home in the French Rhône.
This Syrah is perfumed and layered, with fresh acidity and concentrated fruit reflecting the region's sunny days and cool nights. The grapes are grown at 400 metres of altitude, and fermentation completes in stainless steel. There's alpine fruit purity, with dark berries and strawberry compote, and herbaceous notes of bramble, white pepper, and fresh mint. A medium-bodied wine that's concentrated and elegant, suitable to drink now, or with age.
