Antonelli
Red WineAntonelli Rosso di Montefalco 2022
The slopes surrounding the walled hilltop city of Montefalco in Umbria are known for grape growing and red wine production. Here, Sagrantino is the most important grape, and aside from the varietal wine Sagrantino di Montefalco, can often be found blended with Sangiovese and Montepulciano.
The Antonelli family owns one of the most historic estates in Montefalco, where they practise organic viticulture on south and south-west facing slopes.
This wine is around 70% Sagiovese, with 15% Sagrantino, and the remainder a blend of other local grapes including Montepulciano. The varieties are picked and vinified separately, ageing in oak for 9 months before joining the final blend.
The 2022 vintage shows vivid cherry, dark plums and wild berry fruit, along with mushroom, wet leaves, and a sappy herbaceousness. On the palate it's well structured and dry, leaning towards full bodied, with powdery tannins typical of Sangiovese. A great alternative to Chianti Classico Riserva.
