White WineSzent Donát Olaszrizling Vineyard Selection 2022
The Szent Donát estate was founded in 1994 by the Kovács family. The family has been in Csopak and the Káli basin for over 200 years, and their love of grapes and their winemaking traditions have carried on through the generations. The winery and the estate were named after Szent Donát, the protector of the wine harvest and the patron saint of Csopak. The estate lies along the stunning northern slopes of Lake Balaton. They own some of the best parcels in Csopak, Tihany, and the Kál basin.
Winemaker Tamás treats this grape variety with the same respect as those considered more noble. Szent Donát Olaszrizling is a vineyard selection from limestone-based soils. Depending on the vintage, he macerates the grapes on their skins for varying lengths of time, presses them together with stems and stalks, ferments the must spontaneously, ages the wine on its lees for six months, and finally bottles it unfiltered with minimal sulfur addition.
Juicy and full on the palate, with a volcanically smoky nose and notes of apple and lemon, it is refreshingly drinkable, boasting a creamy, gently mellow mouthfeel. The low pH carries the wine astonishingly smoothly across the tongue, lending it length and vibrant vitality. An exceptionally attractive Welschriesling that is gastronomically versatile and confidently satisfies most white-wine cravings. The perfect all-rounder.
