Kopp Baden-Baden Balzenberg Spätburgunder Monopollage 2020

"Kopp is a relatively young winery in a German context, with the first vines being planted by mechanic Ewald Kopp in 1996, starting with a hectare of Spätburgunder, and learned his skills at Bernard Huber, a pioneer of the variety in Germany. Over the years, they’ve grown to a significant 32 hectares near Baden-Baden.

“After Ewald passed away in 2012, his son Johannes, who was honing his craft at Bleasdale here in Australia, came back to Germany, dropped out of University and took the vineyards and winery under his stewardship. Since he’s been at the helm, he’s eliminated the use of herbicides and mineral fertilisers, and now the vineyards are certified biodynamic by Demeter as of 2022.

Cacao nibs, blueberries, sandalwood, fresh raspberries all in that aroma mix. There is almost an incense quality to it. Such a juicy palate with a great acid component you don't otherwise see in many Pinot Noirs. Black cherry, ripe plum, framed by a fine seam of ripe tannin.” - Importer
