Dicey
White WineDicey Chenin Blanc 2024
Established by brothers James and Matt Dicey, Dicey is a small wine producer based in Bannockburn, Central Otago, where James oversees viticulture and Matt is responsible for winemaking. The family has been closely involved in the development of Central Otago's modern wine industry, particularly through its association with Mt Difficulty. Chenin Blanc remains an unusual variety in the region, where Bannockburn's dry continental climate and substantial diurnal temperature variation allow the grape to develop considerable ripeness while retaining its characteristic acidity. The 2024 growing season began with a warm spring, followed by dry conditions through much of summer and a relatively late harvest on 3 May. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed and fermented warm on full solids with indigenous yeasts, with fermentation finishing at approximately 28 g/L residual sugar. Bottled in July 2024, the wine is unfined but filtered. Aromas of apricot, persimmon and ripe melon introduce a rich, supple palate, with flavours of baked apple, quince and citrus complemented by subtle honeyed complexity. Its natural sweetness is balanced by pronounced acidity, giving the wine considerable freshness, textural depth and length. An excellent example of Chenin Blanc's versatility in one of New Zealand's most distinctive growing regions.
