Vaskapu Kékfrankos 2022

The Pécs appellation lies south of Budapest, west of the Danube River, and near the borders of Croatia and Serbia. The region enjoys a sub-Mediterranean climate, with cooling, consistent breezes from the Danube and the protective Mecsek Mountain, creating ideal conditions for organic and biodynamic viticulture. The long, warm growing season has minimal frost risk, while the volcanic bedrock, combined with loess, clay, forest loam, and high lime content, shapes the wines' structure.

Historically, Pécs was home to Furmint and Hárslevelű, along with traditional varieties like Kadarka, Olaszrizling, Traminer, and Sárgamuskotály. In the 1830s, Cirfandli (Zierfandler) arrived from Austria and became a local favorite. Since the 1990s, reds like Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Merlot have thrived in the region's climate.

Géza cultivates 2.5 hectares of vines, blending heritage and modern varietals. Farmed biodynamically with minimal intervention and no tilling, his vineyards include one hectare each of Kadarka and Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside smaller plots of Hárslevelű, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. New plantings of Kadarka, Kékfrankos, Olaszrizling, and Rhine Riesling (Rajnai Rizling) are underway. Additionally, Géza sources organically grown Grüner Veltliner from Mohács and biodynamic Kékfrankos from Szekszárd. With his first commercial vintage in 2019, Géza produced just under 4,000 bottles, setting the stage for a future rooted in both tradition and innovation.
