Somlói Vándor
White WineSomlói Vándor Olaszrizling 2024
Olaszrizling is (still) the most widely planted white grape in Hungary. Despite its name, Olaszrizling is unrelated to Riesling (it literally means Italian Riesling, mirroring its Italian name 'Riesling Italico') and has been cultivated throughout the Carpathian Basin for centuries, finding a particularly compelling expression on Somló's basalt-derived soils. While often associated elsewhere with approachable, everyday wines, on Somló the variety shows intense structure, mineral intensity, and ageing potential. Tamás Kis works across the hill's volcanic slopes, farming organically and focusing on varieties capable of transmitting the character of place with precision. The wine shows orchard fruit, citrus peel, almond, and white flowers, supported by the saline, smoky mineral character that Somló is famous for. Bright acidity, subtle phenolic texture, and a persistent volcanic minerality provide structure and length.
