White WineSomlói Vándor Juhfark 2024
From the volcanic hill of Somló in western Hungary, the grape for this wine is the endlessly amusingly named grape 'Juhfark' (yoo-fark) the variety most closely associated with the region. Cultivated on Somló for centuries, Juhfark remains one of Hungary's most distinctive indigenous grapes, valued for its ability to transmit site with unusual clarity while retaining acidity even in warmer vintages. Tamás Kis works across the hill's basalt-derived soils, where the combination of volcanic bedrock, shallow topsoils, and elevated exposures contributes to the variety's characteristic tension and structure. The wine shows citrus, quince, green apple, and white flowers, supported by the saline, smoky mineral character that has become a hallmark of the region. Firm acidity and a lightly phenolic texture provide definition and length.
