White WineSomlói Vándor Furmint 2024
From the volcanic hill of Somló in western Hungary, this Furmint reflects Tamás Kis's commitment to one of Hungary's most important grape varieties, most famous for its use in Tokaj. Furmint has a long history on Somló, where the combination of basalt-derived soils and a cooler, wind-exposed environment produces a more restrained and mineral expression of the variety, it also happens to be well suited to the warming climate, and thus a good white grape to be working with and investing in across Hungary as the climate changes. Tamás Kis works across the hill's volcanic slopes, farming organically and focusing on varieties capable of transmitting the character of place with precision. This Furmint shows citrus, green apple, quince, and white blossom, supported by the saline, smoky mineral character that Somló is famous for. Bright acidity and a lightly textured palate replete with shimmering volcanic minerality provide structure and length.
