Red WinePeter Wetzer Spern Steiner 2021
Sopron’s Spern Steiner vineyard has long been regarded as an unofficial Grand Cru (in fact, it was classified as such in the old system), and Wetzer’s 2021 Kékfrankos makes a compelling case for its reputation. From old vines rooted in thin, stony soils rich in mica-schist and quartz, the wine is fermented spontaneously in open vats with gentle extraction before ageing in old Hungarian barrels and being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result is a dark-fruited but finely etched iteration of the grape: plum skin, blackberry, juniper and violets layered over a cooling, slate-like mineral line. Firm, tea-like tannins and subtle smokiness carry the wine through a long, savoury finish that speaks clearly of Sopron’s schist-driven terroir.
