Szepsy
White WineSzepsy Furmint Szaraz 2020
On the nose, there's a captivating blend of crushed stones, smoke, and the zest of grapefruit, leading to a palate that's robust, showcasing tight-knit stone fruit flavors and pronounced mineral notes. The finish is elongated by remarkably fine tannins.
Dating back to the 1700s, this region holds the title of the oldest in the world to implement a vineyard classification system, a tradition maintained by today's vintners who are the custodians of this rich cultural and historical legacy. Currently, it's the single-vineyard wines that are generating significant buzz, known for their dry and potent character that distinctly reflects the terroir and the volcanic essence of the soil.
The Szepsy family has been entrenched in the winemaking tradition of the Tokaj region since the late 16th century, with Istvan Szepsy and his children delving deep into the potential of this storied area. Although the region's sweet wines remain among the most esteemed globally, the Szepsys recognize that diversification is key to enduring success in the contemporary market. Their estates, spanning just over 56 hectares near the village of Mád in Tokaj, yield a mere 50,000 bottles annually. The wine not meeting their stringent standards is sold off in bulk. Many of their vineyards, characterized by their lofty altitudes and steep, rocky inclines, benefit immensely from the volcanic soil, the area's distinct microclimate, and the celebrated Furmint grape, all contributing to the unique allure of the final product.
The commitment to excellence in their vineyards is unwavering, with rigorous practices like performing three green harvests and the meticulous trimming of grape bunches to ensure only the best grape quality from each parcel. This dedication extends to sustainable farming practices, with a strict policy against using chemical fertilizers in their vineyards.
