Greywacke Pinot Gris 2024

The 2024 is sourced from three Marlborough vineyards: River Block and Restaurant Block on the central Wairau Plains, where young alluvial soils contain substantial deposits of greywacke river stones, and Falveys Vineyard in the upper Omaka Valley, planted on gravelly clay-loam. The grapes were hand-harvested between 15 March and 4 April at relatively high ripeness, then whole-bunch pressed and fermented predominantly with indigenous yeasts in seasoned French oak barriques, with a smaller proportion fermented in stainless steel. Fermentation was arrested with 9.2 g/L residual sugar remaining, after which the blended wine spent a further six months on lees in old oak barrels. The result is a richly aromatic, off-dry Pinot Gris, combining ripe peach, white nectarine and pear with vanilla, Turkish delight and subtle floral notes. The palate is generous and creamy, with concentrated stone fruit, gentle spice and sufficient acidity to balance its considerable weight. A substantial interpretation of Pinot Gris, showing the aromatic richness and textural complexity associated with the Alsatian tradition.
