Red WineUtopos MSG 2021
The Utopos Vineyard on Roennfeldt Road is distinguished by its impeccable balance of acid and tannin found in its matured fruit. Such equilibrium gives rise to wines that are immediately enjoyable in their youth and possess the potential to mature gracefully for a decade or perhaps even longer. The 2021 vintage, with its near-perfect conditions, has birthed an array of red wines that promise to highlight this vineyard's unparalleled potential for years ahead. From the budding of vines in late September to the harvest in March and April, the consistently mild climate was conducive for uniform canopy growth and fruit maturation. Well-spaced rains across spring to autumn nurtured the vines and preserved subsoil moisture, resulting in a commendable average yield of about 1.5 tons per acre.
On March 16, Grenache and Mataro were harvested for the MSG blend and underwent co-fermentation, incorporating 20% whole bunches. The fermentation was maintained at warmer temperatures with consistent pump-overs for 6 days. Before completion, the wine was transferred to tanks and barrels. It matured for nearly 18 months in French hogsheads, with 20% being new and the rest being third-use, medium-toasted. The final blend consists of 55% Mataro, 32% Shiraz, and 13% Grenache.
Leading the aromatic profile is Mataro, exuding delicate spices and herbal notes, while Shiraz and Grenache chime in with an ensemble of black and red fruits. The palate is graced by Grenache's juicy red fruits, harmoniously melding with Shiraz's deeper flavors and Mataro's savory, meaty notes. The wine's taste is indulgently rich and ripe but maintains a lean profile. It's crafted to captivate immediately upon uncorking, yet it's structured to age gracefully for 10-15 years.
