Südsteiermark, in the southern part of Austria’s Styria region bordering Slovenia, is acclaimed for its outstanding white wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), and Morillon (Chardonnay). The region’s viticulture benefits from a varied topography of steep slopes and diverse microclimates, influenced by the Alps and the nearby Adriatic Sea. These conditions, coupled with mineral-rich soils composed of limestone, marl, and gravel, contribute to the distinctive character of Südsteiermark wines.
Wines from Südsteiermark are known for their vibrant acidity, complex aromas, and pronounced minerality. Sauvignon Blanc, the flagship variety, was introduced in the 1800’s by French nobles from the Loire. Styrian examples often exhibit notes of elderflower, green herbs, gooseberry, and green apple, with a striking minerality. Winemakers in the region are recognised for their innovative approaches and commitment to quality, often employing sustainable and biodynamic practices.
The Sattler family’s winemaking heritage in the Austrian village of Gamlitz dates back to the late 1880’s. Known for their commitment to quality and their forward-thinking approach, the family’s modern success was shaped in the 1960’s by Wilhelm Sattler Senior and his wife Aloisia. Today brothers Alex and Andreas have inherited most of the work in the cellar and the vineyards, and have fully embraced the winery’s commitment to biodynamics.
Sattlerhof winery oversees 40 hectares (99 acres) of biodynamically cultivated vineyards, including renowned sites such as Kranachberg and Pfarrweingarten, which are considered the region’s “grand crus”. Sustainability is at the core of their philosophy, with a strong emphasis on biodiversity, nurturing soil health, and ensuring the longevity of the vines. Their vineyards are carefully maintained as dynamic ecosystems, reflecting the family’s deep respect for nature and dedication to producing exceptional agricultural products.
