Weingut Stein 1900 Alfer Hölle 2022

Dr. Ulrich Stein, fondly known as Ulli, a farmer and winemaker in the legendary Mosel Valley. He passionately advocates for preserving the steep, slate vineyards of the region. Ulli has reclaimed vineyards in the Lower Mosel, crafting exceptional wines from forgotten sites. The Stein family, valuing old vines, retained their ungrafted European rootstock vines in the 1970s when others replanted fearing Phylloxera. Ulli now tends to about 10% of Germany's total ungrafted plants, producing wines with aromatic lift, generous cut, and site purity. His philosophy centres on letting the vineyard dictate the wine.

Among his exceptional creations is Stein's Alfer Hölle 1900 Riesling, sourced from a small 0.2 ha parcel planted in 1900 with 1,200 ungrafted Riesling vines—the second oldest producing vineyard in the Mosel. Fermented with native yeasts in neutral barrels, this dry-style wine exhibits reserved, dense, and intensely structured characteristics, showcasing the saline and slate-driven minerality of these ancient vines. A truly magnificent Mosel Riesling destined to age beautifully over the next couple of decades.
