White WineGranbazán Ambar 2023
Etiqueta Ambar uses grapes from vineyards that are over 40 years' old, mostly in Cambados and Meao in the Salnas Valley on sand and granite soils. Almost Riesling like in terms of structure and acidity (Diego Rios worked in the Mosel Valley) this is stony and intense, with layers of lime cordial, green apple and lemon zest and impressive extract.
Founded in 1981 in the heart of Val do Salnés, Rías Baixas, Bodegas Granbazán is a winery centered around a stunning Bordeaux-style manor house and the surrounding 13.5-hectare Finca Tremoedo vineyard. It’s a stunning view to rock up to this incredible property with its neo-classical tiling throughout surrounded by the lush and verdant slopes of its prized vineyard.
The family-owned property is exclusively dedicated to cultivating the Albariño grape. The original vineyard Planted in 1980 features a diverse selection of albariño clones from across Galicia. A combo of classic Galician know-how, constant innovation and modern technology has driven the success here.
Of course much of the recent accolades must be attributed to the talent of its renowned winemaker, Diego Ríos. He was named the ‘Young Winemaker of the Year’ foll wing a special report ‘Rías Baixas 2023’ by the journalist and MW Tim Atkin. He has singled out Diego Ríos as a particular talent in the region and the results speak for themselves. After several years at prestigious Mosel winery, ‘Heymann-Löwenstein’ he has heard the call from Granbazán where he has taken the estate from strength to strength.
