Pécs
Pécs, a small but historically significant wine region in southern Hungary, traces its viticultural roots to the Roman city of Sopianae. Once a centre of medieval monastic winemaking, the region persisted to make quality wine under the Ottoman era when vineyards were preserved for religious purposes. Sheltered by the Mecsek Hills, Pécs enjoys a warm, Mediterranean-influenced climate, ideal for aromatic whites such as Cirfandli (Zierfandler), a rare local variety known for its floral, spicy character. Though small in scale, Pécs remains a unique and innovative wine region, blending centuries of tradition with a renewed focus on quality and regional identity.
