Daniel Fries
White WineDaniel Fries Estate Riesling 2023
Hand picked and wild fermented, this Riesling spends six months on lees in a mix of stainless steel and large German oak Foudres, balancing the fresh acidity with texture and intensity. Minerality and juicy fruit; citrus, white peach and a hint of spice. Bottled with only 3.8 grams per litre of residual sugar.
Daniel Fries is a rising star of the Lower Mosel. He spent his early years in wine travelling and learning tricks of the trade across Germany, Burgundy and Oregon. After returning home to the Mosel, he started making his own wine from a small corner of his family's eponymous domaine.
Mosel vineyards are known for their steep slopes, but Daniel's vineyards could better be described as cliffs. Towering above the town Winningen in the northern Terrassenmosel (terrace Mosel), the warmth retained by the slate, and the sun exposure afforded by the steep slopes, lend his Rieslings ripeness and power. Vine cultivation here is labour-intensive, and all done by hand, leading to wines of a special intensity and a particular expression of place.
