Champagne

Synonymous with celebration and grandeur, to buy champagne has long been recognised as a gesture for momentous occasions, or to honour a particular moment in time. With its bubbly mouthfeel, stereotypically fruity profile and an onus on being crisp and refreshing when compared to other wines, a fitting champagne is effervescent in both sensation and the circumstances in which they’re opened.

Qualifying as a champagne is an unexpectedly strict process. While all champagnes are sparkling wines, not all sparkling wines are necessarily champagnes. Originating out of its namesake Champagne region in France’s upper North-East, only select varieties like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier processed with traditional technique in the region’s vineyards can gastronomically qualify under its appellation. Known infamously as the Méthode Champenoise (‘the Champagne Method’), the approach to winemaking involves a second fermentation in-bottle, wherein a second yeast solution is added to the base liquor and trapped for an amount of time - giving rise to the fizz of its carbon dioxide release.
