White WinePeter Wetzer Ság 2022
From the volcanic hill of Ság in western Hungary, Wetzer’s Olaszrizling (Welschriesling) takes on a markedly different character from his wines from Sopron. The basalt-rich soils and higher elevation lend a firmer spine and a more pronounced mineral edge, while the cooler, wind-exposed site keeps the fruit taut. The wine is harvested by hand, fermented spontaneously in a mix of stainless steel and old Hungarian barrels, and left on fine lees for additional texture before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine shows preserved lemon, pear skin, chamomile, crushed stone and a faint smoky, volcanic note, with a gentle phenolic grip carrying the finish.
