Cabernet Franc Wines

Cabernet Franc is one of the foundational red grape varieties of France, best known as a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon and as a key blending component in Bordeaux. Yet it finds its purest and most expressive form in the Loire Valley, particularly in Chinon, Saumur-Champigny, and Bourgueil, where it produces medium-bodied wines marked by lifted aromatics, fine-boned tannins, and striking freshness.

The variety ripens earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon and is well-suited to cooler climates. At its best, Cabernet Franc reveals a perfumed nose of violets, graphite, and redcurrant, with earthy undertones of tobacco leaf and crushed herbs. In warmer years or regions—such as the Right Bank of Bordeaux or parts of Friuli and the New World—it can develop deeper fruit, spice, and structure. But its elegance, savoury detail, and natural poise remain its calling cards.
