Description
Luna Estate is a relatively new venture that combines two former Martinborough vineyards, Alana Estate and Murdoch James. The vineyards, Blue Rock and Eclipse, produce flagship wines that showcase the unique characteristics of their respective terroirs. While they are primarily focused on Pinot Noir, they also produce other varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Rose, Chardonnay, and Syrah under the guidance of chief winemaker Joel Watson.
The Blue Rock vineyard, one of the two that make up Luna Estate, features old vines that produce a single site wine of depth, succulence and gentle power. It was first planted in 1986 during the early days of NZ viticulture. This wine is more approachable in its youth than its sibling, the Eclipse Pinot, but has the same density and silkiness. All grapes are destemmed but with a fairly long maceration and a year in French oak. This is a lo-fi wine with no added inputs apart from minimal sulphur.
