Though Kadarka, Olaszrizling, Tramini, Muzsla Cuvée, Pinot Noir, and Juhfark continue to be made, his vision now centres on a clear hierarchy—village, cru, and grand cru—elevating these two varieties to express the terroir of Muzsla.

With an increasing emphasis on extended maceration, minimal intervention, and prolonged élevage, Frigyes is careful to ensure that technique never overshadows terroir. Muzsla, representing the village level, comes primarily from volcanic-limestone soils and younger vines. Béla (this wine), classified as a cru, is rooted in clay and loess, while Faricka, the grand cru, is planted with the estate’s oldest vines on volcanic-limestone slopes. Farming practices favour small, thick-skinned berries, making a delicate approach essential. Béla, for instance, undergoes the ‘Hamburger method’—a combination of whole-cluster fermentation, foot-treading, and hand-destemming—over two weeks to soften its naturally firm tannins. The wine then spends ten months in Hungarian oak before being bottled unfiltered and unfined, with only a whisper of SO₂ at bottling. Harvested later and fermented to dryness, the resulting wine boasts approximately 12.5% alcohol content. Yet, it leans toward savory notes without sacrificing acidity. Far from being a mere stand-in for Sauvignon Blanc, this Grüner pairs splendidly with hearty dishes like Tafelspitz (boiled beef) or roasted poultry. It's bracingly fresh and energetic, but it would stand to benefit enormously from some time in the cellar.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0734/6022/0218/files/WeingutGeyerhofGrunerVeltlinerSteinleithn1OTW.png?v=1696738025
weingut-geyerhof-gruner-veltliner-stockwerk-2021
Weingut Geyerhof Grüner Veltliner Stockwerk 2021

Originating from younger vineyards near Oberfucha village, the Stockwerk wines predominantly grow on granite and gravel terrains. With the Gaisberg's Grüner in focus, a novel creation named “Hofstudien,” which translates to “Geyerhof studies,” has emerged. The grapes are sourced from Pfarrweingarten Grand Cru site, a small, well-sheltered, south-facing vineyard planted on coral-reef limestone soils, farmed exclusively by Sattlerhof. Aged for 20 months in 300-500-liter barrels, with around 10% being new oak, the resulting wine has fantastic tension, remarkable elegance and intensity. In the future, the estate will move to more field blends, in a nod to tradition, and in an effort to strive for the best terroir expression each vintage.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0734/6022/0218/files/Sattlerhof_Pfarrweingarten_Morillon_Cardwell_Cellars.png?v=1737002085
sattlerhof-auslese-sauvignon-blanc-2021
Sattlerhof Auslese Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Southern Styria's wine-growing region is defined by its steep vineyards, diverse soils, and challenging weather. Made from Zeleni Sauvignon (aka Sauvignon Vert, aka Friulano), nicknamed "sexy skin" by Jean-Michel for its especially soft skins, the grape is delicate and prone to botrytis, which often adds a subtle dimension to the wine. Despite fermenting on skins for over a week, Ravan is often mistaken for a white wine due to its greenish hue that persists even after bottling. Herbal, citric, and slightly spicy flavors combine with a glossy texture, making it an ideal companion for spring and summer dishes. The winemaking process blends Jez and Ravan, while Corno, kept separate, provides structure and depth. Though Zeleni is a high-yielding variety, careful cultivation and restricted yields result in expressive, high-quality fruit.
